In celebration of Black History Month, the Galleries at Moore College of Art and Design present a look at the Civil Rights Movement during its most turbulent times.
On view through March 15, the galleries spotlight the photographs of Joel Katz, a seasoned photographer, information designer, author and teacher at University of the Arts, in Joel Katz: And I Said No Lord.
The exhibition includes black-and-white photography that Katz took during the “Mississippi Summer” of 1964, a time when Civil Rights violence was running rampant in the state. Katz ventured to Mississippi and photographed a number of scenes throughout the state and wrote a coinciding text at the tender age of 21-years-old.
Like all exhibitions at the Galleries at Moore College of Art and Design, admission is completely free. But take note, the galleries at Moore are closed on Sundays and school holidays.
A number of special events accompany the exhibition — on Tuesday, February 25 at 11:30 a.m., join Katz for a lecture about his work and time in Mississippi and on Friday, March 7, join Katz for a book signing and reception at 5:30 p.m.
