Most of us have the seen the photo of Mitt Romney from Tuesday night’s presidential debate. It was a taken moments before the second presidential debate wrapped up at Hofstra University. When I first saw it, I posted it to my Facebook account with the comment, “I think this photo from the debate is a window into Mitt Romney’s soul. I’ve always been a great judge of character, and this man frightens me”. I stand by that.

To me, this photo is of a man who is not accustomed to being challenged on anything. His bullying is legendary. Nearly anyone who has ever crossed his path has their own story about Mitt Romney’s excesses and his confrontational, often insulting, nature. In short, this is a photo of a bully who just had someone stand up to him, and he didn’t like it one bit. But worse, if you look closely at his eyes, there’s something malevolent in there. Some dark, twisted part of of his inner soul slipped out, like the scene in Lord of the Rings when Bilbo and Frodo Baggins are together again in Rivendale and Bilbo’s face, for a split second, flashes a demonic anger when exposed to the One Ring. This seemed like such a moment for Mitt Romney, when an unguarded moment revealed much about his true character. That’s the reason this photo seems to be so popular today. It speaks volumes as to how the second presidential debate went for Mitt Romney.
