They only encourage risky behavior. The only 100% effective way to prevent drowning is total abstinence from going in the water.
And if you do, by chance, find yourself struggling with drowning, then no life-saving or otherwise procedure or act should be allowed to be administered….
May I add: No swimming lessons for people under 18. It’s just not appropriate. So what if the statistics show overwhelmingly that education saves lives? We should be teaching restraint and personal responsibility.
Especially no swimming lessons that imply the acceptability of alternative swimming styles. Butterfly? Backstroke? Freestyle!? These are gateways to the downfall of civilization. The only acceptable swimming style is that one popularized by Ben Franklin, and only by adults within the bonds of a country club.
